Common Questions by dancers and their parents:

  • Most dancers benefit from starting college planning in 9th or 10th grade, especially if they are considering competitive programs. Early planning helps with training choices, academic balance, audition readiness, and realistic college options. However, meaningful support can begin at any stage of high school.

  • College counseling for dancers is specialized admissions advising that addresses both academics and the unique requirements of applying as a dance major. It includes college list building, audition and prescreen strategy, BA vs BFA guidance, academic planning, and long-term career considerations that general college counseling often overlooks.

  • Unlike traditional college counseling, counseling for dancers accounts for auditions, physical demands, training schedules, degree structure, and post-graduation career realities. Dance majors must balance academics with intensive studio time, making program fit and long-term planning especially important.

  • Yes, most colleges require auditions for dance majors, either live or through prescreen videos. Auditions often play a major role in admissions decisions and scholarships, making strategic preparation essential.

  • You can reach us anytime via our contact page or email. We aim to respond quickly—usually within one business day.

  • A prescreen video is a recorded audition submitted before a live audition or campus visit. Prescreens help programs decide which dancers to invite or admit. Strong prescreens are program-specific and show not just technique, but potential, versatility, and fit.

  • Yes, many dancers successfully double major, especially in BA programs and liberal arts colleges. Double majoring requires careful school selection, realistic workload planning, and early strategy. It can provide career flexibility and income diversification after graduation.

  • Yes. Dance And College Counseling works virtually with families nationwide, supporting dancers across the U.S. through every stage of the college planning and admissions process. We can also schedule in person sessions in the Boston and Washington, DC metro areas.

  • We work with both dancers and parents. Parents are often key decision-makers and financial supporters, while dancers are navigating demanding schedules and high-pressure choices. Our approach supports the whole family.

  • We help dancers select the right institutions and position themselves best for both artistic and merit scholarships. We also help families understand need-based aid packages. We do not advise on private scholarships but can look over applications.

  • Absolutely! The essays are way more important than dancers think and we love helping with brainstorming and asking questions to get you thinking deeper on your drafts. We don’t copy edit or draft! Why: 1) we are crazy for ethics and 2) schools can totally tell when an essay is overly coached by an adult and that’s a huge sign that someone isn’t ready for college.

  • Yes! We do complete technique evaluations, helping you see what’s great about your dancing and how to approach stuff that’s still at your growth edge. We also coach audition solos to give you that outside eye. Although we are all choreographers, we don’t choreograph audition solos. We think it’s best for you to either choreograph your own with some guidance from us with what to include, OR to work with one of your teachers you’ve known a long time and really knows your dancing.
